You may find that people have some different ideas about what constitutes positive behavior, which will help shape yours as well.
Once everyone agrees on which behaviors are most important for your team, make sure everyone understands how those behaviors translate into daily action items at work (this might mean adding them to an internal calendar). This allows people who work remotely or outside of regular business hours to know what kinds of contributions they should aim for each day and week—and makes it easier for managers and supervisors to hold everyone accountable when things aren’t getting done according to plan!
Turn values into clear communication
While the values you choose will vary from company to company, there are some things that should be universal. Make sure your company’s values are clear and visible. Use them to shape your communication, as well as how you select new employees.
Consider this approach: Whenever an employee does something that demonstrates a key value, let them know about it in a positive way (and then keep doing it). For example, if an employee is willing to help out on a project at the last minute, don’t just thank them—let everyone else know that they helped out at the last minute. This reinforces both their good behaviour (helping out) and the value behind that behaviour (being ready when needed).
Reward and Recognize
Recognition and rewards can be as simple as a thank you. When done well, recognition is a powerful tool for reinforcing positive behaviors.
While all employees want to feel like they’re making an impact at work, it’s important that your recognition includes specifics about the individual employee. This makes the recognition more meaningful, which in turn builds trust and confidence in your company culture.
Recognition should also be timely; it should happen within hours if possible, or ideally immediately after someone has done something well (or poorly). If you wait too long to praise good behavior then it might be forgotten by the time you get around to acknowledging it!
This brings us onto our next point: public praise. It may seem obvious but people perform best when they know their boss is watching them – even if only subconsciously! Make sure that any positive feedback is shared publicly with everyone else on your team so everyone knows who is doing well and how much they are appreciated by management.
